An Overwatch Movie could be on the cards
Activision Blizzard have already signed off on a Call of Duty movie, but after several incredible Overwatch shorts the need for an Overwatch movie is growing. It seems an Overwatch adaptations from the shorts is not outside the realm of possibility, at least according to Activision Blizzard Consumer PRoducts Group CEO Tim Kiplin, who said it’s something the company would like “very much.”
"We're a platform and a portfolio, these franchises exist across multiple platforms, so it's not just the game as a driver, but it's linear content [movies and TV] as a way to expand the audience and expand the opportunity and then esports, because pull all that together and you're talking about franchises that are frankly like no other," Kilpin said in an interview with MCUK.
The conversation arose during a discussion about the upcoming Call of Duty movie, where Kiplin added that the company takes movies based on their franchises very seriously, and let’s be honest - those Overwatch shorts are incredible.
"It's not one of those situations where someone is saying 'I don't care just get it made!' That's not what's happening. We do think that if it's done well it has the opportunity to expand the base audience, beyond the traditional foundation that the game appeals to."
Overwatch has developed an incredible story thus far, which tracks the rise and fall of the Overwatch team who are reforming in the face or real danger once again. There are pinnacle characters who could set the scene for a story which could shape the gaming-movie franchise, and the fact that it’s animated removed many limitations seen and action remakes such as the Warcraft movie, which had mixed reviews. We’re hoping the Overwatch team come together with something soon, as I don’t think I’ve ever wanted anything more from Activision Blizzard.
