Yesterday, the Game Awards announced their nominees for Game of the Year (GOTY). Titles include Horizon: Zero Dawn, Persona 5, Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and, of course, PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS. The title of the Game of the Year is rather prestigious, and many community members felt PUBG did not qualify as it’s still in Early Access.
A Reddit thread on PUBG titled “PUBG shouldn’t be a contender for GOTY, there should be full releases only.” While this is a worthy consideration, many gamers have taken to social media and other outlets to express their opinions on the matter. Some new publications have even gone as far as editorials to rationalize their opinions on the controversial nomination.
Some of the key discussion points on the matter are, of course, that PUBG is in Early Access. While this doesn’t mean much in terms of its nomination by the Game Awards, it is something worth considering to critics. PUBG, as it stands, is zero-scored. What this means is that top news outlets did not score PUBG because it hasn’t been fully released. Many of these outlets did reviews but left the score at zero. It got rave reviews, as expected, and continues to dominate news outlets, but some feel that a score is an important factor in an award nomination. While these are the arguments against PUBG’s nomination, those who are in favour have noted that Early Access doesn’t really mean anything. The game was sold to gamers and many games come out through a year and make changes and add content. Early Access is just a name given to games these days. What’s more important to consider, is what the games are really about?
Games which have been considered for GOTY are often picked from a number of categories. PUBG definitely ticks those boxes. It’s a popular game, it’s fun to play, and it continues to dominate the news. Despite its obvious bugs and other issues which come with “Early Access,” it’s still a rather beautiful game. It looks good, it feels good, and it’s definitely worthy of an award. The only issue is that it’s competing against some really incredible titles. Horizon: Zero Dawn is arguably one of the most beautiful game, and a close second has to be Breath of the Wild. Mario Odyssey is also one of the newer games to be released in 2017 and its rich history and a new spin on the classic series also makes it an extremely strong contender. Regardless of public opinion, PUBG will most likely remain as a contender, but it’s highly unlikely that it will win when looking at the competition.
